Meknes is a city in northern Morocco and the third largest city of the kingdom.
Meknes was the capital of Morocco under the reign of Moulay Ismail (1672–1727), before it was relocated to Marrakech. The urban population is estimated at 650,000 with the metropolitan population close to 1,000,000. It is the capital of the Meknes-
Meknes has a Mediterranean climate with continental influences. Its climate is similar to the one in Sevilla. The temperatures shifts from cool and cold in winter to hot days in the summer months of June–September.
Meknes, one of Morocco’s four imperial cities, is a fascinating destination filled with historical sites, impressive architecture, and vibrant culture. Here are some must-see attractions in Meknes:
Bab Mansour
One of the most beautiful and famous gates in Morocco, Bab Mansour features intricate tilework, calligraphy, and massive wooden doors. It’s a perfect spot for photography.
Place El Hedim
Meknes’ main square, similar to Marrakech’s Jemaa el-Fnaa but smaller and less crowded. It’s surrounded by cafés and local shops, making it a great place to soak in the atmosphere.
Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail
The final resting place of Sultan Moulay Ismail, who made Meknes the capital in the 17th century. Non-Muslim visitors are allowed inside the outer parts, where they can admire the peaceful courtyard and stunning Moroccan architecture.
Heri es-Souani (Royal Granaries and Stables):
A remarkable example of Moorish engineering, these massive granaries and stables were built to store food and house thousands of royal horses. The architecture and cooling system are impressive.
Sahrij Swani (Agdal Basin)
A large artificial lake near the granaries that was used as a water reservoir for the city. It’s a peaceful place for a walk with great views.
The Old Medina
Smaller and more relaxed than other medinas in Morocco, it’s a great place to explore local markets, historic mosques, and artisan shops without overwhelming crowds.
