DAY TRIP FROM FEZ TO VOLUBILIS

Our Fez excursion starts at 9 am and finish same day at 7pm. We start a day trip from Fez to Volubilis in the morning at 9 am to visit ancient Roman ruins of Volubilis.  It is an UNESCO World Heritage site. The ruins remained substantially intact until they were devastated by an earthquake in the mid-18th century and subsequently looted by Moroccan rulers seeking stone for building Meknes. It was not until the latter part of the 19th century that the site was definitively identified as that of the ancient city of Volubilis.

During Roman times, Volubilis was a major producer of olive oil. The remains of buildings dedicated to olive pressing are still readily visible, as are the remains of the original presses and olive mills. One such building has been reconstructed with a full-size replica of a Roman olive press.

Volubilis is a fascinating ancient Roman city in Morocco, known for its well-preserved ruins and stunning mosaics. Here are the top things to see when visiting Volubilis:

    Triumphal Arch of Caracalla

This impressive arch, built in 217 AD in honor of Emperor Caracalla and his mother, is one of the most iconic structures in Volubilis. It marks the entrance to the city and is a great spot for photos.

    Basilica & Capitoline Temple

These ruins once formed the administrative and religious center of the city. The Basilica was used as a courthouse, while the Capitoline Temple was dedicated to the Roman gods Jupiter, Juno, and Minerva.

    Stunning Mosaics

Volubilis is famous for its well-preserved floor mosaics. Some of the best include:

    • House of Orpheus – Features Orpheus playing the lyre, charming wild animals.
    • House of the Labors of Hercules – Depicts the legendary Twelve Labors of Hercules.
    • House of Dionysus and the Four Seasons – Shows detailed scenes of Roman life.

    Decumanus Maximus

This was the city’s main street, lined with remains of shops, houses, and columns, giving a glimpse into daily Roman life.

    Public Baths

The ancient baths, with visible heating systems, showcase Roman engineering and the importance of bathing culture in their society.

    The Forum

The political and commercial heart of Volubilis, where decisions were made and trade flourished.

    Tingis Gate

One of the main gates leading into the city, offering a sense of Volubilis’ former grandeur.

    Olive Presses & Aqueducts

These highlight the agricultural wealth of Volubilis, especially its olive oil production.

    Panoramic Views

Volubilis sits on a hilltop, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside, especially at sunset.
